Ryan Giggs

He has scored some good goals, Ryan Giggs. Like that one against Arsenal in 1999. I'll never forget the first time I saw it on youtube about ten minutes ago, with the Killers on backing vocals.

This is a result of me experimenting with pencil meets photoshop techniques, quite unsuccessfully.

Me vs. Diego vs. Pablo

After seeing Picasso's version of Las Meninas the other day (Monday 13 April, to be specific) when I went to the Picasso: Challenging the Past exhibiton at the National Gallery, I started doing my own...

...but I obviously got bored pretty quickly.

Picasso's version looks like this:

And, just in case you're a complete philistine, Velasquez's original looks like this.

Threadless: Karemoke

Childish idea, childishly executed... it can only be a Threadless submission.

Karemoke - Threadless T-shirts, Nude No More
That's fifteen minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Start the Weak drawing

Likenesses have never been my strong point, so I really need to practice drawing them.

The trouble is, when it comes to thinking of people to draw I can only ever think of two people: Andrew Marr and Lily Allen, and I've tried to draw them already (here and here).

Still, here's another quick crack at Andy.

My, my, how can you resist me?

The festive tv schedule was distinctly lacking this year, and so I failed to meet my usual quota of awful family-friendly movies. I did however manage to see Mamma Mia! on DVD though. Whilst I watched it I drew this.

I bought myself a new MacBook Pro for Christmas, and loaded it up with all the latest Creative Suite stuff too. Clearly it doesn't mean anything I do is going to be better, but it can at least now all be done from one armchair - as this picture was - using the built in iSight camera to take rubbishy photos of pages held up in front of it.

Through The Wire, to the limit

Unlike the Ting Tings, I've started many things: a daily exercise routine, writing a proper novel, reading a proper novel, learning how to knit... but I've finished very few. So it was with a certain sense of pride I watched the final episode of The Wire last night. Still distinctly behind the bandwagon, but nonetheless: 63 hours of watching is something of an achievement.

And whilst everyone likes Omar (arguably that's what won Obama the US election) I've always had a soft spot for ol' Captain Do-rag Bodie Broadus, as demonstrated by this awful bit of teenage fan-art I made a week or so ago.
He was good people.

Great, wonderful, amazing show. Awful, awful title music.
Sing it with me now: "When you walk through the garden..."

Busted

I did that thing this morning of desperately running alongside a bus as it indicates to pull away. Pounding on the side and then pleading mutely with the driver to let me on, whilst two decks of bored eyes fixed on me trying to mime "I was just here... I've already got my ticket... It's mighty cold out here... Please sir, let me on..." etc. etc.
The road was busy and so the bus was sat there by the stop, jostling outwards, for over a minute. The driver granted me only the slightest shake of his head. It was long enough for me to get embarassed and start pretending that actually I didn't want that bus after all.

I drew this whilst I waited out the forty minutes until the next one.

(photographed and coloured on the next bus)

Life Drawing

Life drawing. Always the most boring type of sketch-blog post.
My first week. I'm consistently shocked by how bad I am at this.

Generally I try to do proper pictures for a while- with charcoal and winking at my thumb and all that- and then treat myself to using pen, which I'm sure is in breach of some rule somewhere.

Where are the jokes? Where are the mild-profanities?
Oh, go on then:

Obligatory shit halloween drawing

Sketch blog etiquette dictates a necessity for a wacky happy halloween drawing on this day.

I did this a few days ago. What's really scary is my apparent mid-nineties Britpop reference frame.
Actually, there's another rule that says you should celebrate your blog's first birthday by drawing a cute cupcake with a candle in it, but I missed that. It was on October 11th.

Three controllers and winehouse

I hope Jamie T wins the Mercury prize tonight. Amy Winehouse is in the papers enough as it is. The anti-drugs league shouldn't worry about her being a bad role model though: she's helping them by looking as so weird as she does. She's a one woman scare story. What with her tiny wire frame body covered in cheap tattoo transfers, her burly uncontrollable sideburns like a rocker, stuck on mrs potato head eyes and lips all topped off with a greasy nest of synthetic hair that probably smells of stale vomit, she's a poster child for keeping clean. Having said all that, I do think she's hot.
